SMSC Development (including British Values)

At Bexton Primary School the teaching of SMSC and 'British values' is embedded in our Ethical Enterprise curriculum, our PSHE policy and scheme of work, as well as our whole school ethos. Spiritual development: At Bexton, children explore beliefs and experiences; respect other faiths, feelings and values; enjoy learning about oneself, others and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity and reflect upon their growing understanding of themselves and others.

Moral development: At Bexton children learn to recognise right and wrong; respect the law; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues and offer reasoned views. Our Ethical Enterprise curriculum offers real life experiences to help develop their moral development.

Social development: At Bexton children investigate social issues; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate, volunteer and cooperate; resolve conflict; engage with the 'British values' of democracy, the rule of law, liberty, respect and tolerance. Our Ethical Enterprise curriculum promotes good role models and offer opportunities for children to volunteer and help others.

Cultural development: At Bexton children learn to appreciate cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain's parliamentary system; participate in culture opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity. All of these are promoted in whole school assemblies.


From November 2014, all schools have responsibility a to promote the 'fundamental British values' of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. As per the advice from the DfE, at Bexton Primary School we aim promote these values through SMSC (spiritual, moral, social and cultural development) and is embedded throughout our Ethical Enterprise and SMSC curriculm and school ethos.
